I know I am! I think just in time for my next build! Maybe someone knows which board I should get? I'd like to pop 2 RTX 3080's in there and see how it performs, but I know I'd also like to make sure I get a MOBO that will accommodate 4 GPU's at a later point. Anybody know which mobo that might be?

For sure, we can't wait to test them out and see how they do with 3D applications. I think this is the generation that will see a performance loss with a PCIe 3.0 x4 slot, making PCIe 4.0 x4 a way more attractive proposition. Excited to check! If you're buying for rendering, probably should go with a Threadripper. But we need to test them out to be sure, so wait for our article on the release :)

Yes, I'm excited but prefer to wait until the numbers come back and let others be the guinea pigs!

Same here, super excited! I'm about to build my first PC after many years on Macs. As it will be my workstation, I preferred to play it safe and got a 2080 Super. Coming from Mac, all the hardware possibilities overwhelm me, but in a good way, 😁.
Let them be the guinea pigs and hopefully that big 3090 runs smooth and stable for my kind of work, so I can upgrade the GPU in the near future! 😬

@dondragon you may not need a 3090 and as Alex points out all over this site. Meaning you might get better price per dollar on mid level cards or a machine with several 1080's for example. There's some sweet spots you can achieve. The 3080 sounds like the sweet spot. I also might be planning my next pc build with two of those hehe. But then again, I might try to put my next one together with two 1660's. You can see here.. they have the best performance per dollar.
Just keep in mind (aka don't be like me) that spending the most doesn't necessarily yield the best machine.

There's also.. ALREADY some recent feedback on the new 30 series and it's not double like they were originally saying. It's good, but not like they've been selling it as.
I, like you am a long time Mac user who recently built my first pc. It's a beast, and I love it. It's not without it's issues.. still constantly ironing those out. ;) Most recent one is a sudden crash due to TDR error. And, what is all over this site as well, is be wary of bottlenecking. There's two 2080Ti's in my pc build and now, just within the last month I've been trying Octane X on my new iMac and it works pretty well, as does DaVinci resolve. So, not sure what your use is, but like me you sound like you want the best scorching monster of a pc and that may or may not be the best investment. Recently I asked Alex about CPU and responsiveness with the fastest processor. Don't get me wrong, GPU rendering is FANTASTIC. But, I have noticed some latency and slowness with BOTH of my current pc's. Not so much with my new iMac. Which apparently has the fastest processor and responsiveness you can get (I guess?) currently. At least until Apple silicon comes out.. maybe.. whenever that is lol.
Don't get me wrong I wholeheartedly encourage you to build one! Just don't break the bank, it might not be worth it. But, it will always be a damn good render station.
I will soon report back with some tests I'm gonna do. I'm going to pit both my top machines against each other in a friendly competition. We'll see how the $3600 pc does against the $3600 iMac, and that'll be fun. (pricing is rough estimate)

I just started seeing the first non official reviews of the 3090 and it is quite disappointing, but we'll have to wait and see if software is the bottleneck for those early numbers.

Yeah! I'm a motion designer, lots of 2D, some traditional frame by frame and also some 3D, but my goal is to get my 3D level higher with my little monster PC, hehe.

The first thing I thought after deciding to build a PC coming from paying premium prices to Apple was: If I've been paying a lot of money for a decent Mac, I could pay a lot of money for a super monster PC, hahaha.

But, I have noticed some latency and slowness with BOTH of my current pc's. Not so much with my new iMac. Which apparently has the fastest processor and responsiveness you can get (I guess?)

Apparently that Intel i9 10900 is a beast! Which processors do you have in your PCs? Let us know what happens with your machine competition. 🤓

Here's to hoping that those gaming benchmarks don't translate to rendering performance... :D I would expect to see a 20% or so improvement over the 3080 in CUDA workloads .. though maybe now we know why nvidia slapped so much vram on the 3090. Might be the only way to warrant the high price :(

PS. You can check the viewports section on this for more info about Intel vs. AMD for active work: https://www.cgdirector.com/intel-core-i9-10900k-10600k-review-for-content-creators/

I still think two separate machines would be ideal for the best of both worlds of rendering and viewport snappiness.

I've just read your article. Those real world results you and Alex found are quite something! 🤓

Having 2 separate machines that excel at their own tasks would be a dream! I guess for most of us the first step is getting the best all arounder we can afford, but that leaves us right in the middle of the 2 machines. 😕

Linus tech on youtube has a few benchmarks for vray, 3d,etc. The 3080 really looks like the way to go, cost, size, power, etc all look preferable over the 3090. I`m just waying up whether to wait for a price drop of the 2070 super and get a second card, or just go straight for a 3080 and sell my existing 2070 super.

Definitely seems that way. I'll wait for the dual-slot blower style gpus to appear, then might do an upgrade of one of my rendernodes :)

@Alex Glawion When do you expect the dual-slot blower style gpus might appear, e.g. based on rtx 20-series experience? Thank you.

Because of the extremely small stock from nvidia, I would guess that the blower style dual slot gpus will be available to buy rather later than earlier. I'd be surprised if you could get your hands on one within the next 4 weeks. Maybe after that.

The Product page is up from gigabyte ( https://www.gigabyte.com/Graphics-Card/GV-N3090TURBO-24GD#kf ) but no listings to be found anywhere yet.

Thank you, ah nice, let's hope 3080s and 3070s will be available too in that format, as I expect them to have a better price to performance ratio.
