Hi everyone!

I've decided to give in and buy a new editing computer as my old system (a 2015 15" MBP) isn't keeping up with my tasks anymore.
I'm wanting to either get a laptop or an ITX/SFF tower as I move around with my system.

I have a budget of $2500 USD for the system as I have a seperate budget for peripherals.

ITX Build - https://nz.pcpartpicker.com/user/theMarble/saved/62LCzy ($2400 USD - $3800 NZD)
3900X - Gigabyte B550I Pro AX - 64GB DDR4-3200 C16 - 512GB NVMe - 2TB SATA SSD - MSI RTX 2060 6GB - NZXT H1 (ITX Case, 140mm AIO & 650W PSU)

Then there is the laptop I've been looking at: ($2400 USD - $3700 NZD w/ Upgrades)
Razer Blade 15 (2019 Base Model) - https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/NBKRAZ030092131/Razer-Blade-15-GTX-1660-Ti-Gaming-Laptop-156-FHD-I
i7 9750H (6 Core) - 16GB RAM (I'll upgrade to 32GB) - GTX 1660Ti - 256GB NVMe SSD (I'll put a 512GB NVMe and 1TB SATA SSD in it).

The laptop has worse specs, but is slightly cheaper and has the advantage of portability.

I'm recording and editing in 4K60 these days. (I've got 2 External Drives for archival)

My old 2015 MBP 15" has a Quad Core i7-4770HQ - 16GB DDR3 - 250GB SSD - Iris Pro HD5200 1.5GB.

Would the laptop be enough for 4K as I would like to travel with the computer without carrying 2 bulky eHDD's around in my small bag.

Thanks!

It depends a lot on your project complexity. Plain 4K60 should be editable on that Laptop, but as soon as you add a bunch of layers, effects, or have specific raw or encoded footage, this can change a lot. With the SFF PC that you listed above you'll definitely get a good bit more performance than from the laptop, even though the specs might look similar on the surface. PC-grade components though are just that much more powerful, as they are allowed to draw more power and there is more room to cool them. So you'll get much more performance from the PC than the Laptop.

Of course if mobility is an important factor, the added performance of the pc might not be enough for you to chose it over the Laptop.

Hi!

If you want both the portability and the power im actually developing a powerful PC that fits in a 40L hiking Backpack!
Its a Node 202 case with CNC milled extra ventilation, and an 120 AIO Corsair H60.
With that i can cool 120 watt for long time, so i can use a Ryzen 9 3950 X with 16 Core/32 threads!
I get 94 % of the performance compared to an 240 MM AIO.
The graphics is an RTX 2060 Mini.
650 w PSU
32-64 gB of Ram

If you want to buy a modified case and build it yourself i can sell that to you!
