Hello frens,

So my current workstation is starting fail and I need help building a new machine under a time crunch. My last build was 6 years ago and I haven't really kept up with new hardware expect for browsing benchmarks and using the pc builder.

My budget is 5.5-6.5K I work mostly in After Effects and Cinema w/ Octane.
Would love to see a nice boost in render times in both. Will you please review the results from the pc builder and maybe advise on dealing with price inflation on gpu's and cpu's. Is a 3 gpu build a thing or do they have to be in pairs? Thanks in advance! See build below:

Will you be using this machine for active work within viewports as well? Or just rendering?

Oh, in that case, run far away from the 1st Generation Threadripper. They aren't that good for active work.

I'd go with a machine like this:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5950X 3.4GHz 16-Core Processor ($799.00)
CPU Cooler: be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 ($80.00)
Motherboard: MSI MEG X570 Unify/ ASRock X570 Taichi ($300)
GPU: 2x Nvidia RTX 3080 ($850)
Memory: Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO 128GB (4x32GB) DDR4 3600 (PC4-28800) C18 Desktop Memory ($649.99)
Storage PCIe-SSD: Samsung 970 EVO PLUS 2TB M.2 Solid State Drive ($344.00)
Power Supply: Corsair RMx Series RM750x 750W Power Supply ($120.00)
Case: NZXT H510 ATX Mid Tower Case ($140.00)
Total: $4000~

Your main issue would be finding these parts for their MSRPs. Hardware prices are quite atrocious now thanks to low supply and high demand.

Thank you again for your help. Is a 3rd gpu possible here? Would it be worth the extra investment for the added performance?

Yes, you can add a third GPU to this setup without losing out on much performance. No issues :) Just make sure you pick a suitable power supply using a reliable PSU calculator.
