Hi there! I'm an animation and VFX student from Malaysia. I'm currently doing my final year project. This is my 1st ever PC build. I'm upgrading from my current laptop which uses i5-7200U CPU. I'm really new to this so it would be great if I could get some feedback! 😁

Budget: Around $2000
Main software: Maya and Substance Painter
Other software: Photoshop, Premier Pro, After Effects, Nuke (maybe)

- Uses mainly CPU render
- Planning to only buy 16GB RAM

Should I go for AMD or Intel? 🤣

Below is the suggested build from the PC Builder. Thank you! 😁

GPU: Nvidia GTX 1660TI 6GB - Gigabyte Windforce ($504.95)
Memory: 32GB (2 x 16GB) G.Skill Trident Z Neo DDR4-3600 C16 ($198.99)
Storage PCIe-SSD: Sabrent Rocket 1TB NVMe Gen4 M.2 Solid State Drive ($169.98)

The Answer is easy but has a twist: You should go with AMD as they are superior in both single and multi-core workload performance currently. The twist is: They are hard to find in stock and at reasonable prices right now.

If you can find a 5900X at or around MSRP, I'd recommend that over the 10900K. Of course, you'll need a compatible Motherboard such as the MSI B550 Tomahawk.

The rest of the build looks good, though keep an eye on GPU prices, as the 1660Ti in your build list is heavily price-inflated.

Alrighty then! Speaking of GPUs, should I go for an RTX instead of a GTX? Let's say, I'm pressed for time to finish my render and decided to render them using GPU (because it's faster), does the type of graphic card affect the lighting in the scene? Due to ray-tracing and stuff?

I feel like I'm asking dumb questions hahaha. Welp, I'm still learning 🤪

Thank you for replying, Mr. Alex! 😁

Yes RTX GPUs have raytracing cores that render faster on supported render engines like octane and redshift. The speedups can be considerable though of course they do cost a good bit more.

Hi again, the seller I’m asking has limited stock on GPUs. They offered me 1660 Super, RTX 3070 or RTX 3080. The CPU is 5900X.

I want to hear your thoughts on this so that I won’t regret buying it.

The monitor I’m planning to buy would be the Dell UP2716D, just like in your recommendations 😊

The 3070 will have the highest value of those three, though if you have the money for a 3080, go with that :) I often recommend the Dell UP2716D as its pricing is decent and it does come with good color accuracy.
