Hi Everyone! I hope you are all doing well.

I was hoping to get some expert guidance, I am looking at buying a new PC for game development (Hobby) and Rendering(Job).
I have been using my same PC since 2012, just upgrading parts bit by bit, but now its time to get a new one.

I have looked at the PC Builder section but the issue is that I am currently in Denmark and the product availability is not the same as other countries, so I need to build something from what the shops here can offer. I found a shop that sells custom built pcs that I want to use as I cannot assemble it myself.

The help I need is that I don't want to buy something that has compatibility issues : )
I am after a Balanced build but high-ish end, so multi GPU but start with 1, same with RAM. Not sure if this is even possible.

CPU
I can get either Intel I9 12900 or Ryzen 9 5950x. Are this compatible with multi GPU? If so, is this motherboard compatible? https://sharkgaming.dk/asrock-z490-aqua

Regarding the GPU, is it better 4 TRX 2080Ti or its just as good one 3070/80/90? I don't think I will ever get to the need of operating at a render farm level, and my current GPU is a Nvidia 1050TI so anything will be an improvement!

I'm using Unity and Blender mainly, going into Rendering and Animations shortly.
Thanks in advance!
Nico

You'll need a LGA1700 motherboard for any Intel 12th gen CPU. Or a b550/X570 motherboard for any Ryzen 5xxx series CPU. The z490 is not compatible with either.

You can get two gpus running at decent pcie-bandwidths on the mainstream platform but will have to opt for a higher-end motherboard. Z690 / X570 depending on the CPU you get.

For 4x GPU you'll need a Threadripper build.

How many GPUs are you looking to buy?

Hi Alex, thanks for the reply!

Well from your message I think its smart to for 2 GPUs only? I wanted to follow the recommendation from the PC Builder section. It shows 4 2080TI, but if the Ryzen 5950 or the I9 12000k can handle 2 GPUs I think that's probably the best choice.

Ideally I want to get a good build for 3D Modeling/Active work in Unity and top it up as much as possible for GPU rendering in the future.

Is a Threadripper build also good for the kind of tasks needed for modeling, compiling code and handle complex scenes in Unity?

Thanks for the help! With such an expensive subject I don't just want to figure it out myself : |

Your article "Best Workstation Computer for 3D Modeling and Rendering" is incredible and super helpful!

The GPU situation is still a bit fickle on the market, that's why the GPU-focused build option is still recommending 2xxx series GPUs and not 3xxx. Optimally you'd even have 4x 3xxx series nvidia gpus, but that's crazy expensive right now and would require quite a strong PSU.

The 12900k/5950X is the better option in my opinion. You then have both, great performance for active work (that's where most of your time is wasted normally throughout a day) and can add two high-end RTX 30xx GPUs for fast GPU Rendering as well, all without breaking the bank or the power requirements.

A Threadripper build focuses too much on pcie bandwidth and core-counts, which you won't be able to make use of at all for unity or other active work. On the contrary, it'll slow you down in active work compared to mainstream CPUs.

Perfect! Thank you so much Alex.
I will see if I can buy parts through the Amazon in Germany through you link, hopefully they deliver to Denmark!

Cheers and keep on the good work!
