Hello,

I'm reluctantly moving away from Mac in order to gain the powers of real time previewing in Redshift with GPU.

- Budget: Trying to keep it under $3k.
- C4D Redshift + After Effects
- I am looking to upgrade in the future.
- I'm located in the US

Will this build give me the ability to get in 4 higher end GPUs in the future?
Is there anything I should consider adjusting to accommodate for working in After Effects?
If I wanted a higher quality case, is there anything I should consider? (this is partially aesthetic and quality of build. this may be remnant of owning apple products)

You'll need to switch to HEDT to get access to enough pcie lanes on the motherboard to drive up to 4 gpus in the future. A Threadripper CPU based Build is the best option here.

e.g. Threadripper 3960X with a TRX40 Motherboard e.g. Gigabyte Designare Ex

You should probably also look into getting a current gen Nvidia GPU such as the RTX 3070 or 3080. Be sure to get a dual slot blower style gpu though, such as the Gigabyte Turbo series.

A bigger case which will be able to accommodate 4 potential GPUs (such as the Fractal Design Define XL R6) and a stronger PSU (Corsair 1600W) would make your system future proof (for up to 4 gpus)

The rest of the components in your list above look good to me!

Feel free to ask if you have any other questions.

Hold off on buying those GPUs right now because the RTX 3070 will be priced within $50-70 of them and outpaces the RTX 2060 by quite a huge margin.

As for the first question - Unfortunately nope :) You'll need to jump to a workstation platform to run 4 high-end GPUs without giving up any performance. On a mainstream Intel platform, the only option would be this board - https://www.supermicro.com/en/products/motherboard/C9Z490-PG

The board uses PLX chips for bifurcation to get 4 working x8/x8/x8/x8 slots.
You can find out more about PLX chips here and see whether it works for your use case - https://www.cgdirector.com/best-mot...o_above),_What’s_the_Performance_Loss_Exactly

If that's not ideal, I'd actually suggest looking into HEDT platforms like AMD's TRX40 or Intel's X299.

Thanks for the responses.

Using the PC Builder, I have to bump up the budget to $3730 in order for the AMD Threadripper to come into play. Considering I'm trying to keep it under $3k, I may have to keep it to a machine that will just work with 2 GPU's.

It seems that you're both saying to wait for the RTX 3070. Is it better to just get one of those for now versus two lower end GPU's that might be better performance per dollar? It seemed that the the RTX 2060 Super was the best performance per dollar.

Regarding the CPU choice, is sticking to the Intel i9 going to be a compromise in a lot of ways or just reduces my ability to tap into 4 GPUs?

I'm still interested in the AMD Threadripper build you guys mentioned but may need to put together the full list and price it out to the specs you offered. Maybe if I get that setup and built then add in the RTX 3070 once those become more readily available, that would be a more future proof option.

I've noticed that AMD is releasing some new GPU's tomorrow that are supposed to be faster than the 3070. Also seems like other GPU options on the near horizon.

I couldn't find this build on PC Builder so I took what seemed closest and started swapping out parts.

CPU: AMD Threadripper 3960X ($1300)
CPU Cooler: DEEPCOOL Castle 360EX ($139.99)
Motherboard: Gigabyte Designare Ex TRX40 Motherboard ($440 ?)
GPU: Nvidia RTX 3070 Gigabyte Turbo (could not find price)
Memory: 64GB (4 x 16GB) Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4-3200 C16 ($269.99)
Storage PCIe-SSD: Samsung 970 EVO PLUS 1TB M.2 Solid State Drive ($149.98)
Power Supply: Corsair RMx Series RM1000x 1000W ATX Power Supply ($270.00)
Case: Corsair Carbide Series Air 540 ($142.99)
Total: $2700 without GPU

Yep, even Nvidia will most likely be launching GPUs to edge out AMD's offerings soon with more VRAM that would be perfect for rendering workloads. Unfortunately, AMD's GPUs aren't an option on Redshift as it's a CUDA-based render engine that only supports Nvidia graphics cards at the moment.

As for whether a single 3070 will beat out 2x 2060, @Alex Glawion would probably know better. I think it probably will get you 80% of the way at half the price.

Why not go with dual 3070s, I just did, and it is outperforming a 3090 in GPU rendering tests (I use Octane and Arnold). You can find them following the nvidia discord, falcodrin twitch, or just snag a couple at the nightly zotac.com 9:41 nightly drop. $499/ea ;)

Make sure you double check case clearance for the GPU's, and factor in radiator placement for your cpu, if you front mount, it loweres the GPU clearance.
