Game Dev, Anim, 3D, video editing, streaming... is there one computer that can do all that?

Hi all,

As I said in my introduction, my current computer is a decade old and a new computer is desperately needed.
  • My Budget: $6000-$2000
  • My plan for the new computer is to Game Dev, Digital Painting, and 3D sculpting/animating, 2D animation, and some gaming. I am hoping to Stream all those activities, but if that proves to be too much for one computer, I am thinking of building a second computer for rendering and streaming.
  • I wouldn't mind upgrading in a few years, but I would rather spend the money now to get a great computer than have to upgrade in two years to get that.
  • Plan to make it in the USA
  • PC Builder Link: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/BPT2cT (I am not married to anything I chose in here really, if you have better suggestions for anything please tell me)

PS: My Brother did recommend checking out TheServerStore for me on the second computer for streaming/rendering I believe, any thoughts?

i'd say drop the Corsair and get a Samsung SSD 980 PRO, it's way faster and reasonable price for 1-2TB, put the money saved into a Threadripper 3960 & RTX 3090 or 3080 Ti to improve rendering time (unless you're not gonna do that, then you can stick with the 5950) and throw in a cheaper 6-8TB HDD for storage

the MB also plays a pretty impactful role in performance, the higher end MB's make better use of high speed memory. that Corsair definitely has to go though, $1.4k!! what do you need an 8TB SSD for? you're gonna want a capture card too if you plan on streaming console games

SSD memory is quite dangerous by the way, they can fail without warning whereas HDD's can take months to completely die & give you ample time to prepare a backup so i wouldn't bank on storing too much stuff of importance on the SSD for the long haul. as someone else around here suggested try and keep only active projects on the SSD and anything else on the HDD. i don't like the setup but until SSD's get cheaper and you can set up a nice Raid 1 without losing so much space and money it's the best compromise vs convenience

EDIT: whoops, didn't see you were planning on building a separate PC for streaming/rendering. with the threadripper/3090 setup you can do both and save some money and stream all on the same PC

The build looks good to me. But do you need 8TB in a single drive? It's usually much better value to grab smaller capacity drives. If you're going to be using that high-capacity SSD only for storage, I'd say go for an HDD instead. But if you regularly work on huge files, then the 8TB SSD is fine.

As for the other parts of your build, they look fine to me. Bump up that power supply to a 1000W if you do any sort of GPU rendering and will need to add more GPUs in the future. I'd also up that cooler by quite a bit for a processor like the 5950X. Grab a 360mm Liquid AIO or get the beQuiet! Dark Rock Pro 4/ Noctua nh-d15 if you prefer air cooling.

That motherboard isn't very good. Switch the motherboard to one from here - https://www.cgdirector.com/best-motherboard-for-amd-ryzen-5000/

Everything else is okay :)

I went with that SSD because from what I was reading in the guides for building the different computers, from what I gathered M.2 PCI-E NVMe SSD seemed to be a great idea, albeit kinda new. I am wanting a fairly large amount of storage for video files, but I guess that might be better to get some external Hard drives for back ups and just keep a few active projects on the main computer, and use the NVMe SSD for programs and OS.

At first I plan to stick with just this one computer, but if it can't handle streaming art and animation well, or gaming then yeah I'll build my streaming rendering computer pretty quick after. My main concern right now is updating to a new computer since with my current PC I have to have task manager up all the time and watch the cores to prevent all four running at 100% for too long and over heating.

I am seeing some comments in the reviews about the "Be Quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4" being a little bit finicky to install, I haven't tried liquid cooling but have heard some complaints from friends who did it and I am fine with with a little fan noise (this could come back to bite me when I stream, but I'll deal with later in my next build in the future if it proves to be a problem).

If I wanna capture console games later, can I wait to buy a capture card then? or is that gonna require either a new build or me adding it to this build now?

Thanks to you guys' info, I have updated the build and here it is:

No, you can easily add a capture card to this build later. No issues. The motherboard might be a bit overkill if you don't need to run multiple GPUs, btw. You can safely consider options in lower price tiers without any noticeable impact on performance and usability.

You usually can get around those issues by moving the fan position upwards, etc.

Storage: Western Digital Blue 6 TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive ($129.99 @ Amazon)
PS. Please get at least a 7200RPM Hard Disk when buying one. A 5400RPM disk will be painfully slow.

Soo, I have come to the realization that the above is more my dream build that I'll one day get to when the Market gets back to normal, but for now since I'll have to stick to my RTX Geforce 1070, I think I'll rein back my CPU from what I had to something a little more reasonable, like the Ryzen 7 3800.

So, after doing a bunch of reworking and now better understanding computer builds, here is my newest picks (Computer Towers are still a mystery to me... rather whether it is better to go mid tower or tall tower.) My memory choice is still fluctuating until I can find out if that motherboard's memory is dual channel or not, might swap it out to 2 32gb sticks if it is.

You really only need a full tower if you want to run multiple GPUs and/or quite a few storage devices. For your build, a mid tower is just fine :)

And yes, most mainstream platforms are dual channel. But that doesn't affect running 4 or 2 memory sticks on the board. You can find more info here - https://www.cgdirector.com/best-mem...#SingleDualQuad_Channel_Memory_Configurations

Thanks, checked it out and went with Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB (2X16GB) DDR4 3200 for my Ram.

Unfortunately, I was getting the AMD Ryzen 3800x from a friend, apparently he used to use it but upgraded or something and offered it to me for cheap, he helped me build the computer and it turns out... something in the build isn't working cuz although little LEDs turn on in the case, the system doesn't boot, so I am back to looking at CPUs.

I have everything bought and just need to swap out the CPU... since I am back at this point ordering a CPU, should I just stick with the 3800x or maybe get the 5800x? (PC part picker mentioned something about vameer and bios)

If you're buying a new CPU, I'd definitely spring for the Ryzen 5000 part. The sweet spot (for value-performance) is the 12-core Ryzen 9 5900X, but an 8-core Ryzen 5800X would do just fine too.
