I saw the post on building a pc for animation and was wondering if I use the same components for lots of dynamics and simulations? I'll be doing character animation with dense rigs with lots of blendshapes, hair dynamics using ornatrix and potentially realflow simulations. Do I follow the same advice or is there anything I need to add/upgrade?

Usually Simulations, Collisions, Dynamics and such are reliant on high single core performance. Easy to find out: Take one of your most complex projects and take a look at the taskmanager to see if you current cpu is being loaded on all cores or mainly on one, when you are calculating/tweaking your rig.

Thanks for the tip! I notice when doing hair simulations it is using all the cores so maybe I will get the threadripper since I also use Vray.
