Hi, I'm building a new work station. The machine will be used in US for CS, heavy on After Effects, Premier, Maya.

The the components I'm looking into are:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 3950X
Noctua NH-D15
MSI Prestige x570
G.Skill Ripjaws V 128GB
GPU: Evga RTX 2060 super
Storage: Samusung SSD 860 EVO 1TB
Storage: SSD M2. Sabernet 2TB NVMe
Storage HDD WD Black 6TB
PSU: Seasonic GX-850W
Case: Phanteks Enthoo Pro
Any comments? My main question is about installing OS and applications.

Should I install Windows 10 on Samsung SSD or SSD M2?
I have space for at least 2 additional SSDm2 so it's not a problem to add later.
Should all video applications be installed on the same drive as Windows.
Should there be a separate HD for scratch disks? SSD or SSDm2
What is the best configuration for OS and video applications, scratch disks?

Thank you.

Hey Eva,
The config looks good to me. Compared to the other specs, the gpu might be a bit on the low end, but will still perform nicely for your workloads. If you are doing any gpu rendering in maya, though, you might want something a bit stronger.

I'd recommend installing the OS and Apps (PP, AE, Maya) on the Samsung SSD, have your active project files and footage on the fastest device (the nvme ssd) and use the HDD for backups / archiving at the end of the day only.

If you want you can get an addition nvme ssd as a scratch disc, but because these devices are so blazingly fast you will most likely not see a difference the using your first nvme ssd as both the source and scratch disc.

As for backups, I recommend having more than a single hdd, and having them in multiple locations. That way you have redundant backups in case one of the hdds breaks.

Hi Alex,
Thank you so much for a quick answer. The reason for Evga 2060 GPU is that I still need the DVI-D port.
It's time to upgrade the screen, but not just yet. This was the newest GPU I could find that still supports it.
This is my big upgrade in almost 10 years so I have to take one thing at the time.
OS and APPs installation answer is really helpful, since I almost have all the parts and I will be putting it together this upcoming weekend.
I do have about 4xHDD of 6GB and it's never enough. And yes, a great reminder to keep them in multiple locations!
