Looks like the RTX 3080 has quite some fire-power:

OTOY OctaneBench 2020 - Overall Score

Blender 2.90 - Classroom CUDA and OptiX Render Time (Cycles, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080)

What do you think?

The 3080's CUDA beating out the Titan's OptiX render time is really something amazing to see :D

Absolutely! Also interesting to see that there seems to be no difference between running the card on pcie4 vs pcie3. At least in gaming.

I think it's mostly because all the games and the game engines were built around the PCI-E 3.0 bandwidth limit. As the console titles start to roll out and the platform matures, I think we'll start to see a gap before September next year.

The biggest advantage for render engines would be the ability to run powerful graphics cards on a PCI-E 4.0 x4 slot without giving up performance. Motherboard choices should become easier. Excited to test them out to see whether there's a direct performance difference between 3.0 and 4.0 ;)

Any thoughts on multi gpu builds with this new line of cards? I'm wondering with the increased power draw will 4 gpus not be possible? Will it get too hot without the blower style cards. I haven't seen any of that style yet. If 4 is not possible is it better to bulid a 2 or 3 gpu machine? will threadripper not be needed in that sort of build?

sorry for so many question. I had just finalized plans to build a 4 gpu machine with 2070 supers and now I am a bit thrown on what to do .

I've seen a dual slot blower style 3090 gpu leak from gigabyte recently, so they are definitely going to be released at some point. Power draw though might be a concern, given that 4x 350W is 1400W and with a 1600W PSU you'll probably need more than 200W for the rest of the system. You also don't want your psu to run at 100% all the time. I think there are very few 2000W PSUs, but there might be more showing up after these gpus.

You'll definitely want to wait for the blower style gpus to be available, as with that power draw, you'll have loads of heat in your case when using open air cooled ones.

The 3080 seems to run fine on pcie3 x16 without any throttling, and I am guessing the 3090 too will not be throttled. So a first / second gen Threadripper would be able to drive 4 gpus (though 2 of those will run on x8 pcie3, not sure how much those throttle)

So looking forward to getting my mitts on one of the newer 3000 series cards, just started getting back into blender, but generally spend far more time on productivity than games, and even then it's the odd sim here and there, I am very tempted to go the full hog and get 2 3090 (SLI'd), I know this is a lot but the rendering power is very appealing, My current blender project has 3000 frames, takes my old GTX 1070 three and a half minutes to render 1 frame, and I suspect once I get everything the way I want it it will be up to 4 minutes per frame, there is so much I would like to do but rendering times is a pain... and that's also with a Ryzen 9 3900x 32GB ram...
