Hello All,
I am newly retired from a major aerospace company and have dabbled in video and 3D projects as hobbies for some time. I just found about DAZ 3D and have started to learn the aspects of using the program. I am also very interested in video editing, want to start editing my old tapes and put together new ones. I purchased PowerDirector 19. I have two go-pro cameras and a DSLR for video projects. As a Christmas present to myself I am looking to build a robust desktop that will support both activities. From a lot of online reading, it looks like I'll need to find a compromise as I believe the build will need a decent CPU and GPU(s). I hope a budget of $2.5 to $3k will get me something that will provide great to superior performance. Am I being realistic or a bit naive? High quality products are my goal as I intend to produce historical content YouTube videos. I am hoping to get a CPU recommendation from the community and build a box around that.

That's a good budget and you'll find a nicely performing pc that will fit it. Here's a suggestion:

AMD RYZEN 9 5900X
Noctua NH-U12S SE-AM4
MSI MEG X570 UNIFY
RTX 3070
G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 64GB (2 x 32GB) 3600 CL16
Seagate FireCuda 520 M.2 2280 2TB PCIe Gen4 (Working projects)
Intel 665p Series M.2 2280 1TB PCIe NVMe 3.0 (OS / Software)
Toshiba HDD 4.0TB 7200 128MB SATA3 3.5 {Projects and backup)
Corsair HX850 850W
Fractal Design Define 7

Hope this helps! :)

Hello Alex – thanks for taking the time to respond. I am pricing out things and have a question about the RTX 3070 GPU. I see all types of RTX 3070 GPUs ranging in price from the $750 MSI GeForce RTX 3080 VENTUS 3X 10G Oc, the $900 PNY GeForce RTX 3070 8GB XLR8 Gaming Revel Epic-X RGB Triple Fan up to the $1400 SUS ROG Strix NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 (PCIe 4.0, 8GB GDDR6, HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort 1.4a, Axial-tech Fan Design, 2.9-Slot, Super Alloy Power II, GPU Tweak II) and of course higher. I’m not a gamer (I‘m a Boomer) so a GPU recommendation and decision rational would be very much appreciated. I don’t want to skimp and hobble the system with a lower cost GPU. Thanks!!

CPU AMD RYZEN 9 5900X 12 Cores - 3700 MHz - 105 watts $ 549
CPU Cooler Noctua NH-U12S SE-AM4 $ 60
Motherboard Unify (AMD AM4, DDR4, PCIe 4.0, SATA 6GB/s, M.2, USB 3.2 Gen 2, Ax Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5, ATX) $ 160
GPU RTX 3070 $1200??
RAM G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 64GB (2 x 32GB) 3600 CL16 $ 118
SSD Working Seagate FireCuda 520 M.2 2280 2TB PCIe Gen4 (Working projects) $ 379
SSD OS / SW Intel 665p Series M.2 2280 1TB PCIe NVMe 3.0 $ 100
HDD Toshiba HDD 4.0TB 7200 128MB SATA3 3.5 {Projects and backup) $ 104
Power Supply Corsair HX850 850W $ 240
Case Fractal Design Define 7 $ 184

Get the cheapest 3070 you can find. They all perform very similarly. The thing is that RTX 3xxx series gpus are out of stock almost everywhere, inflating prices crazily. The MSRP for the 3070 is 499$, so anything that is much higher than that is over-priced.

Hi Alex - I have assembled most of the parts for my build but still waiting for a RTX 3070 at a reasonable price.

The Fractal Define 7 has three Dynamic X2 GP-14 fans preinstalled. Would there be a need or reason to add any more? The case has room to expand up to a total of nine fans. Since this build will be used in my home office, the ambient temperature will be around 70 to 76 F year round.

I assume a front-rear, push-pull fan arrangement would be best but would like your opinion. Also would like to keep fan noise down so can I assume 4 fans running at a low to mid-range RPM would be quieter?

Thanks for your insights - Happy New Year!!

Paul

3 to 4 fans are more than enough. Low RPM fans are definitely quieter, yes!
