I have 5950x based system that I was/am very happy with, but the Asus Dark Hero MOBO ($400) died in the middle of a project deadline after only 1 year of use! I headed out and replaced it instantly with a MSI Tomahawk MOBO ($150) to get back up and running to finish the project.

Then I RMAed the Asus MOBO, ticking a checkbox with option to get credit or refund if the MOBO was truly dead, instead I got a replacement Asus MOBO sent by Asus 1 month later in a plain brown box, (refurbished or could be unused as the stickers are still on the board). If I had got credit from the local shop, I would have made a new 7000x based system, later on as I need to have a second system, can't risk not having a backup system any more.

As I am stuck with an extra MOBO. Question is

A-
Do I build a backup PC system by buying a new 5800x or 5900x or 5950x + RAM for it?

OR

B- Forget about the spare Asus MOBO and in the future build a 7000x based system?

Note- I already have spare PC case, GPU, Noctua cooler, 1000watt PSU.
These spare parts can be used on 5000x or 7000x based PC.

Thanks.

Wow, that sucks! Hope you didn't lose any data/projects you were actively working on.

What kind of workloads are you running? Any chance to leverage this second PC as a rendernode? Just having it sit there doing nothing in case your main system crashes is a bit of a waste. You could also sell it on ebay, as it's probably still unused and you can get some good money for it, right? Though that brown box might be a hindrance in selling it near full price.

My main concern is this: For a 7xxx System you'll need DDR5 RAM, right? So if you bought another set of DDR4 RAM for your backup system now, if you'd be upgrading in the future, you need two new sets of DDR5 RAM (if you were to build near identical systems). I'd probably get a 7xxx system + mobo + ram + your other parts as your new main system, and then leave the current 5xxx + ddr4 ram as the new backup system.

Thanks for the reply, Alex.
I was doing regularly back up, although I had not backed up for a day. Luckily, only the MOBO died, so I could transfer the data from the HD.
I did have to wait a day till I could rebuild my system and truly know if I had lost any data. Was stressful time!!!

Yes, I could use the second PC for rendering etc. I doubt anyone would buy the MOBO. Anyway, you gave me enough food for thought.
