Upgrade CPU Question: 3900X to 5950X or AM5 CPU?

I built my current system four years ago, and it's time to upgrade. I've been waiting on AMD to release its new Zen 5 architecture, but it looks like that won't happen until September, and I need an upgrade to my processor now. So instead of getting a new motherboard etc, for now I thought I'd just switch out the processor. I'm wondering what the most powerful processor is that I can get to work with my current system:

AMD Ryzen 9 3900X 12-Core Processor 3.80 GHz
GeForce RTX 2080ti
MSI X570 Ace motherboard
G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 64GB 288 Pin RAM DDR4 3600
Corsair RMX750x 750 Watt 80+ Gold certified power supply

I realized I should probably add that I use it for 3D modeling and animation, and my current PC viewport is super slow now, so I'm wondering which processor would give me the best single core boost.

Hey Addie, the most powerful CPU on the AM4 / x570 Platform is the Ryzen 5950X. There certainly is a bump in single core performance compared to your 3900X as well, so it should be quite noticeable. ~ +15%.

Of course with a new motherboard (either intel or and) you could bump this number up even more, to about +50% viewport perf speed / single core speed. Intel Core 14900K or AMD Ryzen 7950X (on AM5) come to mind here.

Hi Alex, thanks for your reply! I'm primarily using blender, as well as UE, marmoset and substance. If I were to upgrade now to the 7950x, would I easily be able to swap out for the new zen 5 processor when it comes out later this year? I should be, right? I know I'll need new memory, but the type listed when I use the pc builder for AMD is for Intel. What do you suggest for AMD? And would I see much of a boost with 128 GB or is 64 sufficient. I have a Cool Master HAF XB EVO case--will that fit the new motherboard, or will I need another? Can I still use my Samsung evo 970 and 860 ssds? And finally, will using my 2080ti still work for now, or would it cause some bottlenecks? Whew, that's a lot of questions, haha.

Yes you'll be able to upgrade to any AM5 CPU coming out in the next few years (most likely). The higher-end the board that you buy the most likely you'll be able to upgrade to many more CPU gens down the line. X670-e would probably make most sense (e.g. Asus ProArt X670E-CREATOR WIFI ATX AM5).

DDR5 RAM such as the 64GB (2x32GB) G.Skill Trident Z5 DDR5-6000 CL30 would work well. For your workloads you probably won't see any performance differences with 128GB with these workloads. Unless you're also throwing After Effects or Premiere Pro into the mix, 64GB will last you for some time.

The Cool Master HAF XB EVO fits ATX motherboards, so it should work fine. You can continue using all of your storage.
