Hello!
I have never built a PC before so this is all a bit daunting, but I'm excited to start!
I am looking to build a 1800 CAD (give or take) workstation so that i can work remotely but also work on personnal projects.

I will be mainly using it to do modeling/lighting in Maya with either Arnold or Redshift and I also will be using a lot Substance Painter.
I will be working soon on Houdini so I would like my computer to handle that as well so I can get more proefficient in it.
I will probably render some frames on this but this is not a priority as I am not going to create a whole movie by myself.
So basically I'm looking for a build that can do it all? I'm looking for something versatile.

It would be nice to upgrade my pc in the future but it isn't really my priority.

I will be buying in Québec,Canada.

I used the PC-builder and this looks good to me but I have no idea as this is my first build. Is 1tb of SSD too much? I would be adding a hard drive.
I assume the pc builder is in USD.

Hey!

This setup looks good to me. It will perform nicely in Maya with Arnold and Redshift, though as we all know, Redshift loves GPU performance, so if you want to render faster you might want to look into a faster GPU such as the 2060 Super or 3060Ti if you can find one in stock.

You'll also see a lot of recommendations for 3rd gen Ryzen CPUs right now, and I agree with this, but because Ryzen stock is so bad and you can hardly find them anywhere, I'd say a 10700k is a viable option that performs well.

Hi Alex!
Thank you for your response :)
I have picked out the parts in pcpartpicker here https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/YhjFbh
I have replaced the 1660Ti with the 3060Ti as the 1660Ti is currently out of stock in Canada it seems.
Does it look like I chose the right parts?
I may update this post because I am not going to buy the parts until late January and maybe some parts will be out of stock by then.
The website gives me compatibility notes, I assume not critical?

Hi Helene, I don't want to cause too much trouble, but I suggest to go AMD instead of intel. What Alex said is true, but if you want to upgrade in the future you will be linked with intel unless you change the mainboard as well. Even a lower-tier AMD ryzen could work for you and in the future, you could swap it. Even if you are not rendering a movie, take into consideration that previews and light tests are somehow cpu intensive.

In any case, this mobo is super useful for a 3d workstation:
Pro WS X570-ACE (or the intel compatible counterpart)
Lots of connectivity, multi gpu and cooling solutions.

I am in the process to do the same thing and for the same reasons as you do.
The build in my post is more expensive, I understand, but I feel to recommend these two parts.
